Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 808 and 810

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor line has expanded again, with the Snapdragon 808 and 810, for high-performance, 64-bit enabled computing with integrated Cat 6 LTE advanced.

While the 410, 610 and 615 all use ARM Cortex A53 cores (simply varying the number of cores and operating frequency), the 808 and 810 move to a big.LITTLE design, explains AnandTech.

Both the new Snapdragon processors include support for Qualcomm’s RF360 Front End, and 3x20MHz Carrier Aggregation, which enables speeds up to 300Mbps.

Advanced carrier aggregation is useful to insure seamless coverage.

They support 60 MHz channels and H.265 capture (encode) and 4K playback (decode). Qualcomm says they will be the first mobile platform to implement Qualcomm’s 2-stream 802.11ac with multi-user MIMO and will support Qualcomm’s IZat location platform for indoor/outdoor location information.

The Snapdragon 808 processor includes 2K display support while the 810 supports 4K displays, with a new Adreno 430 graphics processing unit (GPU). It’s said to deliver up to 30% faster graphics with 20% less power than its predecessor, the Adreno 420 GPU. They use 20nm technology.

The chips also support both HDR photo and full HDR video. How does that work?

Perhaps it’s like the Magic Lantern software for Canon cameras that can alternate frames with different exposures. The frames are later merged into a smooth HDR video (above).

The Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors are anticipated to begin sampling in the second half of 2014 and expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2015.
