Interactive Sculpture Illuminates TED’s 30th Anniversary

Unnumbered Sparks is an interactive net sculpture that spans 745 feet between the Fairmont Hotel and Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver BC. Passersby can control it via their smartphones, notes The Verge.

Artists Janet Echelman and Aaron Koblin collaborated to create Unnumbered Sparks, for TED’s 30th anniversary. Spectators connected to the project’s Wi-Fi can use their smartphones to control how colored lights move, while ambient sounds will come out of each smartphone’s speakers.

The piece is basically “a distributed website on the sculpture,” or a bunch of web browsers working together to manipulate light, sound, and movement.

It runs entirely in Google Chrome, with the help of several modern web technologies. Unnumbered Sparks will later travel to other cities around the world.
