Cisco says more than 200 service providers have deployed Cisco Service Provider Wi-Fi technology, with more than 18 million carrier-grade access points deployed worldwide across networks operated by service providers, enterprises, stadiums, public sector entities and commercial organizations.

One carrier customer is PT Telkom in Indonesia, which is deploying 100,000 access points across the country — one of the largest deployments of Wi-Fi access points by a single service provider in Asia.

Hotspot 2.0 was deployed at Mobile World Congress, serving more than 80,000 conference attendees and exhibitors. AT&T, Cisco and Accuris Networks collaborated with several global mobile operators to provide single-sign-on service across multiple hosting venues.

According to Cisco’s projections, by 2017 more traffic will be offloaded from the mobile network than will be on it.

Carriers like South Korea’s SK Telecom are installing nationwide WiFi networks in a big way. SK Telecom’s ‘Giga Wi-Fi’ network supports up to 1.3Gbps of speeds using 802.11ac. It also offers 150Mbps LTE using 20MHz on the 1.8GHz band and 150Mbps LTE-Advanced through 10MHz (800MHz) + 10MHz (1.8GHz) Carrier Aggregation.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) regulator auctioned LTE spectrum across three bands, 800MHz, 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz. SK Telecom (51% market share) and KT Corp (31% market share) control just over 80% of the country’s mobile market, while LG Uplus has a 17.8 percent share.
